Hualcan 6160m
Hualcan lies just to the north of Copa in the Cordillera Blanca of Peru. Normally climbed from the wee town of Huaraz, this mountain has become considerably harder in recent years as the glacier has retreated. There is good ski mountaineering on the plateau between this peak and Copa.
The survey height for Hualcan is 6122m, but SRTM data indicate that the peak is a bit higher than this and that 6160m is more likely correct.
Hualcan seen from the peak of Copa to the south. The plateau between the peaks, and the ascent of Copa itself, are good ski mountaineering objectives in the Cordillera Blanca.
Hualcan from the airfield at Anta in the Callejon de Huaylas, just north of Huaraz.
We organise guided ascents of this peak every year. For details of how to climb Hualcan, Copa and the neighbouring peaks of the Peruvian Cordillera Blanca, please see our guidebooks, which are available in English, Spanish, Polish and French editions, direct from us or from all good bookshops and mountaineering shops.
